About Us

Founded in 2000, The Woman's Voice Institute is an organization devoted to educating women and supporting the cause of Woman's Voice. Located in Pasadena, California, we offer private consultations, seminars, and corporate training on women's personal and professional development, voice, and empowerment.

Why “Woman’s Voice?”
Current research shows that we women have our own distinct language as well as hidden connections to our physical voices. These attributes are integral to our ability to communicate clearly, express, and represent ourselves to others. We focus on Woman’s Voice in all its aspects: inner and outer, expression, connection, creativity, and spirituality with the goal of creating access to our woman’s individual and authentic voice and authority.

Why do women need voice training?
In 21st century America, we women are at the threshold of new demands for full participation economically, politically, and socially. We are called upon to speak out with greater presence and greater visibility. In addition, we all have an individual and particular inner voice that longs to be heard in a language expressive of our inner lives and experiences.

Yet, many of us feel unprepared for the challenges of speaking out and being heard. How many of us were encouraged to express our woman’s unique gifts for language? How many of us have arrived in adulthood burdened by messages about how we talk or how we, as ladies, should talk?

We may be highly educated, professional women. We may be highly trained in our vocations or our sports. Yet, how many of us received the same level of attention and training to our voices as we received in education and training in our respective fields?

How do I find my own woman’s voice?
Our structured program of lectures, writing exercises, and voice training will guide you on a journey of connection from the distant past of Woman’s Voice, through time, to our own culture with its messages about how women speak, and there we find, identify, and address your own personal history and individual needs.

What is voice training?
We have adapted the voice training method called Vocal Awareness™ to meet women’s needs. Created and trademarked by Arthur Samuel Joseph, M.A., founder of The Vocal Awareness Institute, Vocal Awareness is the only voice training method that integrates the mind/body/spirit trinity. Through its seven rituals, Vocal Awareness teaches us the skills to coordinate our breath and body, strengthen our vocal muscles, release tension, and enhance the sound of our speaking/singing voice. Through Vocal Awareness, we are able to come into contact with our deeper Self, to become more consciously aware, and to connect and communicate our deeper Self to the outside world through the power and beauty of our voice.

How is Vocal Awareness adapted to teaching woman’s voice?
In over 40 years of research and teaching, Arthur Joseph discovered that we women have unique connections to our voices. These connections affect our ability to care for our voices, to produce sound, and to understand our voices, not just as instruments of communication, but as integral to our identity, to our feeling of vitality and our sense of well-being. The Woman’s Voice Institute is the only organization that works exclusively with women to teach these profound concepts and to train us to respect and nurture this essential aspect of our being.

What about men and men’s voices?
Here at The Woman’s Voice Institute we also vigorously encourage men to question, to explore, and to develop their own identities through voice. Our mission is to serve women and we happily refer interested men to The Vocal Awareness Institute at www.vocalawareness.com.
